Finally, something new

8 Nov

Back in September, I posted on Facebook that the beginning of the school year always brings out the desire in me to make a new start of some kind. Usually, I say I’m going to start writing again. But that isn’t anything new. I wanted to try to get myself out of the rut I’ve been in for the past 3  years.

So I signed up for a dance class. I’ll give you time to get your laughter under control now.

Done? Okay.

Why the hell would I sign up for a jazz class? Well, first and foremost, it’s waaaay out of my comfort zone, and I figured that was a good start toward getting unstuck. Second, I need to shake up my exercise routine. I haven’t been going to the gym much for the past 6 weeks or so, due to a knee injury, but I find myself less enthusiastic about it than I used to be. I need something new. Third, my daughter is a terrific, natural-born dancer, and I figure hey, maybe somehow she inherited it from me? Maybe buried somewhere deep under all of my insecurities and extra pounds and mental image of myself as a total klutz, there’s a hidden talent for dance, just waiting to be tapped.

Yeah, I doubt it too, but I’m going to give it a try. It’s a 6-week class, one hour each. If my knee holds up, I’m hoping this experience will stretch more than my body.
